The banks of the Soča River in Solkan, Slovenia, were alive with energy, anticipation, and the unmistakable spirit of Team Wales as two of our talented young paddlers, Sadie and Gwion Williams, proudly represented Wales as part of Team GB at the 2025 Junior & U23 European Championships.
From the moment they arrived, Sadie and Gwion embraced the challenge with determination and pride. Training began under unpredictable conditions, with fluctuating water levels following stormy weather. But both athletes adapted quickly, showing resilience and focus. Gwion added Kayak Cross training to his routine, looking sharp and confident on the water, a sign of exciting things to come.
As the week progressed, the team took time to recharge. A visit to a local monastery offered a moment of calm and reflection, with breath taking views of the Slovenian Alps. Back on the water, Sadie’s experience on Welsh rivers came into its own. Her ability to read the course with precision helped her glide through slalom training with style and control.
The opening ceremony marked the official start of the championships, and with the sun shining and the water just right, the stage was set. Gwion kicked off the racing with his K1 Junior heat, qualifying in 5th place in a tightly contested round. He went on to deliver a fearless run in the final, finishing 7th overall, a brilliant result that showcased his determination and talent.
Sadie followed with a secure and skilful run in her C1 U23 heat, earning a place in the semi-final. Though her semi didn’t go quite to plan, her resilience and dedication were clear. She carried herself with grace and strength, and we know she’ll come back even stronger. Sadie has an incredible future ahead, and we’re proud of everything she achieved in Solkan.
Then came Kayak Cross and Gwion’s moment to shine. He qualified through the time trial and delivered a jaw-dropping move at Gate 5, charging from last to second to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. With a lightning-fast start and a nail-biting finish, he powered through to the semi-finals. Starting in fourth position, Gwion surged to the front, winning his heat and earning a place in the final.
And what a final it was. In a thrilling showdown, Gwion gave it everything, crossing the line in second place to claim a silver medal for Wales. It was a moment of pure joy and pride, a reward for his hard work, courage, and unwavering commitment.
As the competition came to a close, we couldn’t be prouder of Sadie and Gwion. They’ve represented Wales and Team GB with heart, skill, and sportsmanship, and we’re excited to see where their paddling journeys take them next. Gwion’s momentum is unstoppable, and Sadie’s strength and determination promise great things ahead.
Thank you to everyone who supported the team, from coaches and families to fans cheering from home. The future of Welsh paddling is bright, and this week in Solkan was just the beginning.
