New guidance from Paddle UK - At Paddle Cymru, we’re committed to promoting safe, enjoyable paddling experiences across Wales and beyond.

That’s why we’re excited to share important news from our colleagues at Paddle UK: the launch of new Occupational Standards for Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Instructors.

These standards are a major step forward in ensuring consistency, professionalism, and most importantly safety in the growing world of paddleboard hire and instruction.

Why This Matters

With the popularity of SUP continuing to rise, so too does the need for clear, robust guidance for those delivering instruction and hiring out equipment. Paddle UK’s new standards aim to:

  • Provide a clear benchmark for SUP instruction across the UK
  • Support hire providers and deployers in assessing qualifications and competence
  • Ensure safe, high-quality experiences for paddlers of all levels

The standards were developed in collaboration with Surfing England and BSUPA, ensuring a unified approach across the paddlesport and surf communities.

What’s Included

The new guidance outlines the knowledge, skills, and behaviours expected of SUP instructors. It’s designed to support:

  • Training providers and awarding bodies
  • Employers and deployers of instructors
  • Individuals seeking to enter or progress within the industry

Mae caiacio môr yn ffordd wych o fwynhau cyfarfyddiadau â bywyd gwyllt, boed yn balod ar Sgomer, morloi oddi ar Ben y Gogarth neu ddolffiniaid ym Mae Aberteifi. Fodd bynnag, mae un creadur arall rydw i bob amser wedi bod eisiau ei weld, ac mae'n annhebygol y bydd yn digwydd ar arfordir Cymru, a dyna forfil. Mae gweld y rhain o gaiac môr yn gofyn am ychydig o gynllunio, o bosibl rhywfaint o deithio dramor a dos da o lwc. Dyna sut y cefais fy hun yn Baja, Mecsico’r llynedd, gyda bag o faw ar fy nec, pothelli ar fy nwylo a rhywfaint o'r bywyd gwyllt gorau rydw i erioed wedi'i weld. O, a gyda Pete. Roeddwn i'n cario rhywfaint o'i faw.

Sea kayaking is a great way to enjoy encounters with wildlife, whether it’s puffins on Skomer, seals off the Orme or dolphins in Cardigan Bay. However, there’s one other creature that I’ve always wanted to see, and it’s unlikely it will happen on the Welsh coastline, and that’s a whale. To see these from a sea kayak requires a bit of planning, potentially some overseas travel and a good dose of luck. Which is how I wound up in Baja, Mexico last year, with a bag of poop on my deck, blisters on my hands and some of the best wildlife I’ve ever encountered. Oh, and with Pete. It was some of his poop I was carrying.
