TIDAL RAPIDS

Tidal Rapids in Wales: Anglesey and The Bitches

Wales is home to two of the most iconic tidal rapid paddling locations in the UK: Anglesey and The Bitches in Pembrokeshire. These sites offer thrilling experiences for confident paddlers, but they also demand respect, preparation, and local knowledge.

Location Overview

Anglesey

Anglesey, off the northwest coast of Wales, is known for its rugged coastline and powerful tidal flows. The Menai Strait is a key location, with features such as Swelly Rock, Stanley Embankment, and Four Mile Bridge offering dynamic and challenging conditions. The tidal races here are influenced by the narrow strait and underwater topography, creating fast-moving water and whirlpools.

The Bitches, Pembrokeshire

Located between Ramsey Island and the mainland near St Davids, The Bitches is a world-renowned tidal rapid. It forms as the tide rushes through the narrow channel of Ramsey Sound, creating standing waves, whirlpools, and powerful eddies. The tidal flow here can reach speeds of up to 10 mph, making it one of the most powerful tidal features in the UK

Tidal Conditions and Timing

Anglesey (Menai Strait)

  • Tidal Flow: Complex and fast-moving, with brief slack water periods.
  • Timing: Tidal races occur both on the flood and ebb tides. Local knowledge is essential to time your paddle correctly.
  • Hazards: Submerged rocks, whirlpools, and strong eddies. The Swellies are particularly notorious for their unpredictability.

The Bitches

  • Tidal Flow: Best paddled during spring tides on the flood tide.
  • Timing: Launch approximately three hours before high water at Milford Haven to catch the best features
  • Hazards: Strong currents, standing waves, and whirlpools. The crossing to Ramsey Sound can be dangerous, especially in wind-against-tide conditions.

Access Points

Anglesey

  • Launch Sites: Menai Bridge, Four Mile Bridge, and Stanley Embankment.
  • Parking: Available near Menai Bridge and other public access points.
  • Local Advice: Check with local clubs or guides for the best launch times and locations based on tide and weather.

The Bitches

  • Launch Site: Most paddlers launch from St Justinian’s Lifeboat Station.
  • Route: Paddle along the mainland coast before ferry-gliding across to the Bitches rocks.
  • Navigation: Use GPS or What3Words to locate the safest crossing points. Always check tide times for Milford Haven

Safety Advice

Both locations are not suitable for beginners. The RNLI and Paddle Cymru recommend the following:

  • Never paddle alone. Go with experienced paddlers or as part of a club trip.
  • Use a qualified coach or leader if it’s your first time.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear: helmet, buoyancy aid, and drysuit or wetsuit.
  • Carry a means of communication, such as a waterproof VHF radio or mobile phone in a dry bag.
  • Check tide times and weather forecasts before setting out.
  • Inform someone of your plans and expected return time.
  • Be aware of local wildlife and conservation zones—these are sensitive marine environments.

The RNLI also advises paddlers to:

  • Know your limits and turn back if conditions change.
  • Avoid paddling in wind-against-tide conditions, which can create dangerous chop.
  • Be prepared for self-rescue and know how to assist others.

Final Thoughts

Anglesey and The Bitches are bucket-list destinations for many paddlers, offering unforgettable experiences in stunning natural settings. However, they are also serious environments that require preparation, skill, and respect.
