Paddle Cymru Slalom Taster Days: Experience the Thrill of Whitewater This May

Get ready to dive into adventure! Paddle Cymru Slalom is thrilled to announce two action-packed taster sessions this May, designed for anyone curious about the high-energy sport of canoe slalom. Whether you’ve never sat in a kayak before or you're just looking to try something new, these free events are your perfect chance to make a splash.

Taster Session Dates & Locations

  • Saturday 24th May – Bala Mill, Bala, Gwynedd
  • Tuesday 27th May – Llandysul, Carmarthenshire

Led by experienced, DBS-checked coaches, these taster sessions offer a fun and safe introduction to the fast-paced world of slalom kayaking. Participants will experience the adrenaline rush of navigating whitewater features — with expert guidance every step of the way.

Who Can Join?

These sessions are open to all ages and no prior experience is required. However, as we’ll be using kayaks and slalom boats, they may be less suitable for some less able-bodied participants. That said, we’re keen to accommodate wherever possible, simply email us ahead of time to discuss any individual requirements.

Under 18s, Do They Need an Adult?

All sessions are led by DBS-checked coaches, but we strongly recommend a parent or guardian remain present — especially as sessions are only a few hours each (with the potential for 2–3 short sessions across the day).

What Should I Bring?

  • Warm clothes and paddling gear (if you have it)
  • A towel
  • Water and snacks
    At
Bala, no catering is available, but further venue-specific details will be provided upon registration.

Parking and Arrival Info

Detailed information on parking at Bala Mill and Llandysul will be sent via email once you register.

Cost?

Absolutely free! These events are proudly funded by the Wales Slalom Committee.

Do I Need to Swim?

No – both venues have shallow water, and participants do not need to be able to swim 50m.

Start and Finish Times

Times are to be confirmed, but participants will receive all the details via email in advance.

Mae caiacio môr yn ffordd wych o fwynhau cyfarfyddiadau â bywyd gwyllt, boed yn balod ar Sgomer, morloi oddi ar Ben y Gogarth neu ddolffiniaid ym Mae Aberteifi. Fodd bynnag, mae un creadur arall rydw i bob amser wedi bod eisiau ei weld, ac mae'n annhebygol y bydd yn digwydd ar arfordir Cymru, a dyna forfil. Mae gweld y rhain o gaiac môr yn gofyn am ychydig o gynllunio, o bosibl rhywfaint o deithio dramor a dos da o lwc. Dyna sut y cefais fy hun yn Baja, Mecsico’r llynedd, gyda bag o faw ar fy nec, pothelli ar fy nwylo a rhywfaint o'r bywyd gwyllt gorau rydw i erioed wedi'i weld. O, a gyda Pete. Roeddwn i'n cario rhywfaint o'i faw.

Sea kayaking is a great way to enjoy encounters with wildlife, whether it’s puffins on Skomer, seals off the Orme or dolphins in Cardigan Bay. However, there’s one other creature that I’ve always wanted to see, and it’s unlikely it will happen on the Welsh coastline, and that’s a whale. To see these from a sea kayak requires a bit of planning, potentially some overseas travel and a good dose of luck. Which is how I wound up in Baja, Mexico last year, with a bag of poop on my deck, blisters on my hands and some of the best wildlife I’ve ever encountered. Oh, and with Pete. It was some of his poop I was carrying.
