This year’s Paddle Cymru Awards were a true celebration of passion, perseverance, and community spirit across Wales’ paddling scene. With a record number of nominations, the judging panel had the incredibly difficult task of selecting winners from a field of inspiring individuals and clubs.

Each award reflects the dedication and impact of those who make paddlesport in Wales so special. Here’s a look at this year’s outstanding winners:

Club of the Year: Aberfan Canoe Club

Celebrating 50 years of paddling excellence, Aberfan Canoe Club has been recognised for its rich history, competitive success, and deep community roots. From local rivers to international competitions, the club has nurtured generations of paddlers, including world champions, while supporting facility development and youth leadership. Their legacy continues with a strong youth membership and a new generation of instructors ready to carry the torch.

Volunteer of the Year: Tony Griffiths

With five decades of service, Tony Griffiths is a true paddling legend. A founding member of Aberfan Canoe Club, Tony has held every club role imaginable and continues to support both club and national initiatives. His work with youth polo, local facility development, and coaching pathways has shaped the sport across Wales and inspired countless paddlers.

Provider of the Year: Sea Kayak Academy

Led by the ever-encouraging Ian, Sea Kayak Academy has created a welcoming and expert-led environment for paddlers of all levels. With access to the stunning Pembrokeshire coastline, top-notch facilities, and a relaxed, confidence-building approach, the Academy has helped many paddlers achieve more than they thought possible. A truly well-deserved recognition for a provider that goes above and beyond.

Club Champion of the Year: Russell Scaplehorn

For 15 years, Russell Scaplehorn has been the heart of Seren Dŵr Slalom Canoe Club. From coaching and mentoring to fixing boats and building training bases, Russell’s tireless behind-the-scenes work has helped the club grow and thrive. His leadership and commitment to grassroots development make him a true champion of the paddling community.

Inspiring Paddler of the Year: Teifion Friston-Kemble

Teifion’s story is one of courage, resilience, and joy. Living with a rare neurological condition, he continues to thrive as a whitewater and slalom kayaker, challenging perceptions and inspiring everyone around him. His infectious enthusiasm, determination, and support for others make him a shining example of what paddling is all about.

Competition Paddler of the Year: Lara Elcock

Lara’s dedication to her training, both on and off the water, has earned her a well-deserved promotion to the Premier Division and this year’s Competition Paddler of the Year award. Balancing her GCSEs with intense training, Lara is now preparing for GB selection and taking on the challenge of C1. A focused, resilient, and supportive athlete, Lara is one to watch.

Special Recognition Community Award: Dee Valley Clean Up

Founded by Aaron Kendall and led by Rob Hurst, Matt Stephenson, and Clive Gibbo, the Dee Valley Clean Up team has made a huge impact on the environment and the paddling community. From river clean-ups to tackling invasive species and responding to environmental hazards, their voluntary work is a shining example of community action and care for our waterways.

Mae etholiad y Senedd yn agosáu'n gyflym, a gallai'r bleidlais ym mis Mai hwn fod yn un o'r adegau pwysicaf yn hanes democrataidd Cymru. Mae cyflwyno'r system bleidleisio gyfrannol, gyda mwy o Aelodau'r Senedd, ffiniau etholaethau newydd ac, yn bwysicach fyth, pleidleiswyr iau, yn gwneud yr etholiad hwn yn arbennig o arwyddocaol. Dyma'ch cyfle i helpu i lunio dyfodol ein cenedl. Os oes gennych yr hawl i bleidleisio, mae'n hanfodol bwysig eich bod yn ei defnyddio.
