HOME / NEWS / Current Post

Are you a passionate slalom paddler from Wales, racing at Division 2 level or above, but not currently part of the Paddle Cymru performance programmes? Fancy sharpening your skills, swapping tips, and training with a crew that’s as keen as you are?

Well, we’ve got something exciting brewing just for you…

Introducing: The Independent Welsh Slalom Training Group

This brand-new initiative is open to all Division 2+ racers who want to keep progressing, stay connected, and build a supportive paddling community, all outside the formal performance pathways.

Whether you’re a junior chasing your next promotion, a senior refining your technique, or a master paddler still hungry for improvement, this group is your chance to train smarter, race harder, and have a laugh while doing it.

What’s the Big Idea?

We know that not everyone fits neatly into the performance programme boxes, but that doesn’t mean your development should stall. This group is designed to complement your regular club training, not replace it. Think of it as your paddling side hustle: extra sessions, shared wisdom, and a network of motivated athletes who want to keep the fire burning.

What You’ll Get

  • Group training sessions - on and off the water, with coaching support
  • Structured training plans - shared and tailored to help you hit your goals
  • Technical feedback & performance advice - from coaches and peers
  • Community vibes - connect with other paddlers across Wales to train and race together
  • A positive, inclusive environment - where progress and fun go hand in hand

Who’s It For?

If you’re:

  • Racing at Division 2 level or above
  • Based in Wales (or have strong Welsh paddling ties)
  • Not currently in a Paddle Cymru performance programme
  • Keen to keep developing your slalom skills
  • Ready to be part of a supportive, organised training group

…then we’d love to hear from you!

This is also a great fit for paddlers who’ve previously been part of the Paddle Cymru pathway and want to continue their journey with structure and support.

Mae caiacio môr yn ffordd wych o fwynhau cyfarfyddiadau â bywyd gwyllt, boed yn balod ar Sgomer, morloi oddi ar Ben y Gogarth neu ddolffiniaid ym Mae Aberteifi. Fodd bynnag, mae un creadur arall rydw i bob amser wedi bod eisiau ei weld, ac mae'n annhebygol y bydd yn digwydd ar arfordir Cymru, a dyna forfil. Mae gweld y rhain o gaiac môr yn gofyn am ychydig o gynllunio, o bosibl rhywfaint o deithio dramor a dos da o lwc. Dyna sut y cefais fy hun yn Baja, Mecsico’r llynedd, gyda bag o faw ar fy nec, pothelli ar fy nwylo a rhywfaint o'r bywyd gwyllt gorau rydw i erioed wedi'i weld. O, a gyda Pete. Roeddwn i'n cario rhywfaint o'i faw.

Sea kayaking is a great way to enjoy encounters with wildlife, whether it’s puffins on Skomer, seals off the Orme or dolphins in Cardigan Bay. However, there’s one other creature that I’ve always wanted to see, and it’s unlikely it will happen on the Welsh coastline, and that’s a whale. To see these from a sea kayak requires a bit of planning, potentially some overseas travel and a good dose of luck. Which is how I wound up in Baja, Mexico last year, with a bag of poop on my deck, blisters on my hands and some of the best wildlife I’ve ever encountered. Oh, and with Pete. It was some of his poop I was carrying.
