The British Canoeing Awarding Body has launched the next review of the BCAB Coach Award, and we’re encouraging the paddlesport community in Wales to get involved and share their views.

This is a valuable opportunity for coaches, providers and organisations to help shape the future of one of the most important qualifications in the coaching pathway.

Whether you are delivering on the water, supporting learners, or relying on qualified coaches to deliver activity, your experience matters.

As the Lead Delivery Centre, Paddle Cymru is supporting this review to ensure the BCAB Coach Award continues to meet the needs of coaches, providers and organisations across the sector, both now and into the future. We want to make sure that voices from across Wales are represented as part of this process.

Why this review matters

The BCAB Coach Award sits at the heart of the paddlesport coaching pathway. It plays a key role in developing confident, capable coaches who can deliver safe, high quality activity across a wide range of environments and settings.

This review is about making sure the award remains relevant, fit for purpose and aligned with real-world delivery. It looks at how well the qualification prepares coaches for the roles they are stepping into, how realistic expectations are, and whether the award reflects the demands placed on coaches today.

Feedback gathered during this review will help inform future developments to the qualification, ensuring it continues to support both individual coaches and the organisations that deploy them.

Have your say

BCAB is inviting feedback through a short online survey. Your responses will help identify what is working well, where improvements could be made, and how the award can continue to evolve in line with the needs of the paddlesport community.

Deadline: 5 June 2026. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Who we want to hear from

BCAB is keen to hear from a wide range of people involved in coaching and coach development, including:

  • Coaches and learners
  • Providers, tutors and assessors
  • Organisations who deploy or make use of paddlesport coaches

Whether you are new to coaching or have many years of experience, your insight is valuable.

A focus on organisations

If your organisation employs, deploys or relies on paddlesport coaches, your input is especially important. Your feedback can help highlight how well the qualification prepares coaches for real delivery, including working with participants, managing risk and meeting organisational expectations.

This is also an opportunity to flag where requirements may need to evolve to reflect changes in participation, delivery models or workforce demands. By contributing, organisations can help ensure the BCAB Coach Award continues to support safe, effective and sustainable paddlesport delivery across the sector.

The lack of rain places a great strain on the environment and our sport. The dry spell is already impacting our waterways, where we are seeing low river levels that could affect fish and wildlife. Therefore, it is important to follow guidelines when you are either considering paddling or when you are on the water.

Every paddle stroke gives us a different view of our rivers, canals and coastlines. But it also gives us a responsibility.

Deefest 2026 had everything you could ask for: sunshine, happy paddlers and a safari theme that paddlers really got behind. From inflatable animals to jungle-inspired outfits, the theme brought an extra layer of fun and set the tone for a festival that didn’t take itself too seriously, both on and off the water.
