Whether you're planning a gentle paddle on your local river, exploring Wales' stunning coastline, or leading trips for others, understanding the environment around you is one of the most important skills a paddler can develop. Conditions on the water can change quickly, and having the knowledge to make informed decisions can help you paddle more confidently, safely, and responsibly.

That's why we're encouraging paddlers across Wales to explore a range of British Canoeing Awarding Body eLearning courses, designed to build practical knowledge that can be applied on every trip. From understanding weather forecasts and tidal movements to managing risk and caring for equipment, these accessible online courses provide valuable learning opportunities for paddlers of all abilities.

Master the Elements with Weather eLearning

Have you ever checked the forecast before heading out, only to arrive at the water and find conditions completely different?

Weather plays a huge role in every paddling experience. Wind strength and direction can alter routes, visibility can affect navigation, and rapidly changing conditions can turn a straightforward trip into something much more challenging.

The Weather eLearning course helps paddlers develop a better understanding of forecasting and how weather affects time on the water. Suitable for both inland and coastal paddlers, the course introduces key concepts including:

  • Wind and its impact on paddling
  • Poor visibility and storms
  • Interpreting environmental clues
  • Understanding synoptic charts
  • Using the Shipping Forecast

Rather than focusing purely on theory, the course takes a practical approach, helping paddlers use weather information to plan trips and adapt safely when conditions change.

Understand Tides Before You Launch

For anyone paddling in estuaries, coastal waters, or tidal rivers, understanding tides is essential.

Tidal conditions can dramatically influence route choices, launch locations, water depth, and journey times. Even experienced paddlers can benefit from developing a stronger understanding of how tidal systems work.

The Tides eLearning course introduces paddlers to:

  • Finding tidal information for paddlesports
  • Tidal flow
  • Tidal windows
  • Estimating depth of tide
  • Understanding how local environments influence tides

Through practical trip-planning scenarios and useful rules of thumb, the course helps paddlers build confidence in interpreting tidal information and using it to make better decisions on the water.

Exploring Coastal Paddling? Learn About Surf and Swell

Coastal conditions are influenced by far more than the weather forecast alone. Understanding how waves develop and interact with the shoreline can make a significant difference when planning paddling journeys.

The Surf and Swell eLearning course introduces paddlers to:

  • Ground swell
  • Wind swell
  • Surf forecasts
  • Environmental considerations
  • Different wave types

Designed for paddlers operating in coastal environments, the course provides a valuable introduction to planning around surf and swell conditions.

Navigate Open Water with Confidence

Open water crossings require careful planning and navigation skills, whether you're travelling across tidal waters or large inland environments.

The Open Crossings eLearning course covers:

  • Estimating position using dead reckoning
  • Following a bearing
  • Calculating set and drift
  • Working out position during an open crossing

The course introduces key navigation principles and highlights some of the hazards and considerations associated with travelling across open water.

Additional Learning Opportunities

British Canoeing Awarding Body also offers a range of other eLearning courses designed to support paddlers, clubs, activity providers, coaches and volunteers.

Equipment Management and Safety

A three-module course covering:

  • Equipment considerations for clubs, coaches and providers
  • Safety checks, maintenance and storage
  • Practical equipment management scenarios

This course is particularly valuable for clubs, centres, and anyone responsible for shared paddlesport equipment.

Introduction to First Aid

This short course offers an introduction to:

  • What first aid is
  • First aid kit essentials
  • Heart attacks and strokes
  • Common paddlesport injuries
  • Heat and cold-related conditions

Please note that this course is not a first aid qualification, but provides a useful introduction to key concepts.

Manual Handling

A practical course designed to help paddlers understand safe lifting and carrying techniques, including:

  • Assessing manual handling risks
  • Protecting joints and muscles
  • Managing equipment safely
  • Reducing the risk of injury

Risk Management and Risk Assessment

Ideal for coaches, leaders, instructors and activity providers, this three-module course explores:

  • Responsibilities relating to risk management
  • Practical approaches to identifying and managing risk
  • Completing and reviewing risk assessments

The course also includes templates and practical activities to support real-world application.

Learn at Your Own Pace

One of the greatest advantages of eLearning is flexibility. These online modules can be completed wherever and whenever suits you, allowing you to develop your knowledge around work, family and paddling commitments.

Whether you're a recreational paddler looking to build confidence, a coach wanting to refresh your knowledge, or a club volunteer seeking to improve safety practices, these courses provide practical, affordable learning that can have a real impact on your time on the water.

Most courses are £10 and there is currently a 3-for-2 offer available on selected British Canoeing Awarding Body eLearning courses, making now a great time to invest in your paddling knowledge.

By improving our understanding of weather, tides, navigation, equipment and risk management, we can all make better decisions, paddle more safely, and get even more enjoyment from our time on the water.

Mae caiacio môr yn ffordd wych o fwynhau cyfarfyddiadau â bywyd gwyllt, boed yn balod ar Sgomer, morloi oddi ar Ben y Gogarth neu ddolffiniaid ym Mae Aberteifi. Fodd bynnag, mae un creadur arall rydw i bob amser wedi bod eisiau ei weld, ac mae'n annhebygol y bydd yn digwydd ar arfordir Cymru, a dyna forfil. Mae gweld y rhain o gaiac môr yn gofyn am ychydig o gynllunio, o bosibl rhywfaint o deithio dramor a dos da o lwc. Dyna sut y cefais fy hun yn Baja, Mecsico’r llynedd, gyda bag o faw ar fy nec, pothelli ar fy nwylo a rhywfaint o'r bywyd gwyllt gorau rydw i erioed wedi'i weld. O, a gyda Pete. Roeddwn i'n cario rhywfaint o'i faw.

Sea kayaking is a great way to enjoy encounters with wildlife, whether it’s puffins on Skomer, seals off the Orme or dolphins in Cardigan Bay. However, there’s one other creature that I’ve always wanted to see, and it’s unlikely it will happen on the Welsh coastline, and that’s a whale. To see these from a sea kayak requires a bit of planning, potentially some overseas travel and a good dose of luck. Which is how I wound up in Baja, Mexico last year, with a bag of poop on my deck, blisters on my hands and some of the best wildlife I’ve ever encountered. Oh, and with Pete. It was some of his poop I was carrying.
