A Safety Alert for Paddlers

As paddlers, we know the joy and freedom that comes with being out on the water. But with that freedom comes responsibility, and safety must always come first. Recent alerts from Paddle UK and the RNLI serve as a stark reminder of the importance of regularly checking your buoyancy aids and lifejackets.

Paddle UK Safety Alert: Inspect Your Gear

Paddle UK has issued a safety alert urging all paddlers to inspect their buoyancy aids and lifejackets before every outing. Wear and tear, faulty components, or improper fit can compromise the effectiveness of your gear. A quick check could be the difference between a safe paddle and a life-threatening emergency.

Helly Hansen Product Recall

In addition, Helly Hansen AS has announced a product recall for specific life jackets. If you own one, it’s essential to check whether your model is affected and follow the recall instructions immediately.

RNLI Warning: Faults Found in Hundreds of Lifejackets

The RNLI recently rescued three experienced sailors off the coast of Devon. Shockingly, only one of their lifejackets functioned correctly. This incident prompted a serious warning from the RNLI, backed by a recent survey in the South West of England. Out of 803 lifejackets inspected, 523 had faults.

This isn’t just a statistic, it’s a wake-up call. Faulty lifejackets are more common than many realise, and the consequences can be fatal.

What You Can Do Today

  • Inspect your lifejacket and buoyancy aid for damage, wear, and proper fit.
  • Check manufacturer recalls and safety notices regularly.
  • Educate yourself and others on how to recognise offshore wind conditions and other common hazards.
  • Share safety messages with your paddling community.

Working Together for Safer Waters

Paddle Cymru continues to work closely with the RNLI and Water Safety Wales to align safety messaging and promote incident prevention strategies

Through collaborative campaigns like #PaddleSafe, we aim to ensure that every paddler is equipped with the knowledge and tools to stay safe on the water.

Let’s keep safety at the heart of every paddle.

Mae caiacio môr yn ffordd wych o fwynhau cyfarfyddiadau â bywyd gwyllt, boed yn balod ar Sgomer, morloi oddi ar Ben y Gogarth neu ddolffiniaid ym Mae Aberteifi. Fodd bynnag, mae un creadur arall rydw i bob amser wedi bod eisiau ei weld, ac mae'n annhebygol y bydd yn digwydd ar arfordir Cymru, a dyna forfil. Mae gweld y rhain o gaiac môr yn gofyn am ychydig o gynllunio, o bosibl rhywfaint o deithio dramor a dos da o lwc. Dyna sut y cefais fy hun yn Baja, Mecsico’r llynedd, gyda bag o faw ar fy nec, pothelli ar fy nwylo a rhywfaint o'r bywyd gwyllt gorau rydw i erioed wedi'i weld. O, a gyda Pete. Roeddwn i'n cario rhywfaint o'i faw.

Sea kayaking is a great way to enjoy encounters with wildlife, whether it’s puffins on Skomer, seals off the Orme or dolphins in Cardigan Bay. However, there’s one other creature that I’ve always wanted to see, and it’s unlikely it will happen on the Welsh coastline, and that’s a whale. To see these from a sea kayak requires a bit of planning, potentially some overseas travel and a good dose of luck. Which is how I wound up in Baja, Mexico last year, with a bag of poop on my deck, blisters on my hands and some of the best wildlife I’ve ever encountered. Oh, and with Pete. It was some of his poop I was carrying.
