Safety First: A New Chapter in Event Safety Training

We’re excited to share a fresh update from the world of paddling safety, because yes, even health and safety can be engaging (who knew?).

Our very own Lydia has officially become a tutor for the new Safety Officer Induction course, which replaces the previous Event Safety Officer training. This revamped course is designed to support clubs and event organisers across Wales, and best of all, it’s free.

What’s New?

The Safety Officer Induction course focuses on practical, accessible safety knowledge tailored to paddling events. It’s interactive, up-to-date, and packed with useful resources from Paddle UK. Whether your club is already doing things by the book or just starting out, there’s something here for everyone.

First Course Highlights

Date: 15 October
Attendees: 10 paddlers from various clubs
Tutor: Lydia (who absolutely smashed it, by the way)

While we don’t have photos from the session (next time, we’ll bring the camera!), we do have some brilliant feedback:

“I was expecting 3hrs on H&S would be a bore, but time passed quickly, and the course was sufficiently interactive to keep me properly engaged. Although our club does most of what the course covered, some great new Paddle UK resources were pointed out to us.”

“Initially the thought of a 3 hour session on a chilly Wednesday after work was a bit daunting but it went quickly and I felt it covered enough in the right amount of detail. Pointing to other information and references is key… It was good to meet and discuss and gain ideas from other clubs.”

“Very friendly, inclusive and thorough.”

What’s Next?

We’ll be rolling out more sessions soon, and we’d love to see your club or organisation involved. Whether you’re hosting a local race, a community paddle, or a national event, this course will help you feel confident and prepared.

One of the most exciting things about paddling in Wales is the sheer variety of ways you can take to the water. Whether you love the calm simplicity of drifting on a lake or the adrenaline of steep whitewater, there’s a craft, and a community, for you.

If you spend enough time on Welsh rivers, you’ll hear the same stories. A paddler who felt unwelcome. An angler whose peaceful moment was disturbed. A swimmer who didn’t feel seen. A landowner unsure who has the right to be where.
